Chess Rules

Objective

Checkmate your opponent's King. This occurs when the King is under attack and cannot escape.

Piece Movement

  • King: Moves one square in any direction
  • Queen: Moves any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally
  • Rook: Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically
  • Bishop: Moves any number of squares diagonally
  • Knight: Moves in an "L" shape: 2 squares in one direction, then 1 square perpendicular
  • Pawn: Moves forward 1 square (2 on first move), captures diagonally

Special Moves

  • Castling: King moves 2 squares toward a rook, rook jumps over king
  • En Passant: Pawn captures opponent's pawn that just moved 2 squares
  • Promotion: Pawn reaching the opposite end becomes Queen, Rook, Bishop, or Knight

Game End

  • Checkmate: King is in check with no legal moves - opponent wins
  • Stalemate: No legal moves but King is not in check - draw
  • Draw: By agreement, threefold repetition, or 50-move rule
